City Fitness

The City of Windsor Heights has added some new equipment to the already awesome gym. A Stepmill was recently purchased and some remodeling was done. Thanks to the city for their support with this project. Now its time to train for the Lung Assos. Fight for Air Climb.


 
   
   
Fire Prevention Week 2011

Windsor Heights Fire met over 300 students from Kohles Elementary for Fire Prevention week. Students ranged from 3-10 years of age. The kids were given a demonstration of the FD gear and were able to sit in a fire truck and ask questions about the equipment.

Clive School Visit

WHFD staff visit the pre-K at Clive School.  The fire department takes pride in talking with the children about fire safety.  The class then got to go outside to look at the truck.  A special vist was given from Sparky the Fire Dog courtesy of Tim Kurth.


 
   
   
Retired Chief Al Hunter

Retired Chief Al Hunter, 79, passed from this life Thursday, January 13, 2011, at his home in Windsor Heights.  In 1978, he was appointed Fire Chief of Windsor Heights - the first career fire chief for the fire department.  During his 26 year tenure with the WIndsor Heights Fire Department, he trained many firefighters and emergency medical technicians.  Thanks Chief Hunter, you will be missed.

Multi-car pile-up

On the last day of 2010, WHFD and West Des Moines Fire units respond to a major pile up-on I-235 westbound, just before the 73rd Street exit.  The freezing rain made it difficult for rescuers to respond to the call for service.  Multiple crashes were happening around the city while state patrol officers desperately tried to close the interstate.  Windsor Heights crews were able to assess patients and assist in the cleanup efforts on the crash while West Des Moines units helped transporting the injured to a local hospital.


 
3 Alarm Fire

Windsor Heights Fire Department along with several other agencies assisted the Urbandale Fire Department on a three alarm fire at the Motel Relax on Hickman Road.   See photos in Image gallery.


 
Recruit Academy Graduation

The Windsor Heights Fire Department is proud of the men and women that recently completed the fire academy.  The are the first graduating class of the Tri-City F.A.S.T academy.  Thanks to all of the individuals that helped train thes new firefighters.  See Image Gallery for more photos.

Clive duplex fire

Just before 3:00 am fire crews from Clive, West Des Moines, Windsor Heights and Urbandale responded to the 1400 block of 81st Street in Clive for a duplex fire.  The fire started in the chimney and spread to the attic before being extinguished by firefighters.


 
   
   
West Des Moines House Fire

Fire crews were called to 102 9th Street in West Des Moines on Thursday around 1520.  Firefighters had to battle winds of more than 30 mph which made fighting the fire tough.  The cause of the fire is thought to be a discarded cigarette on the back deck, but is still under investigation.  Windsor Heights provided mutual aid.

I-235 Bus vs SUV

On the morning of August 9th the Windsor Heights Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle crash on I-235 involving a Dart bus and an SUV.  Clive and West Des Moines ambulances provided mutal aid.  See album in the image gallery.
