During the annual fire inspection of 7900 Hickman, Recruit Ruane got once in a lifetime chance to meet the Prince of Darkness.  Ozzy was hard at work when the fire department interrupted his afternoon.  A short photo op was given upon request.


 
2 Alarm Residential

WHFD along with Clive and Johnston Fire Departments were called to duty early Sunday morning for a residential assingment. Intial reports stated a sofa on fire. 5571 pulled out of the station to find heavy smoke and fire showing 2 blocks away. 5571 made the intial attack to the C side  with a 2 1/2. CFD layed into 5571 and water supply was established. JFD was at the ready as the RIT team. Entrance to the front door showed heavy fire and heat conditions and a defensive operation was called for. A second alarm was requested and the assitance of Urbandale and West Des Moines Fire was recieved. The main body of the fire was quickly extinguished and some long hard overhaul was performed by all crews. Great job by all responding crews and thanks for the help!


 
   
   
Multi Company Level Training

WHFD was able to join with Urbandale and Clive FD's to do some multi company level drills at the old Super Value Office building in Urbandale. Drills included advancing hose lines into large area building and utilizing apartment lines and high rise packs appropriately. Large area search and removal of a downed firefighter were also performed. Thank you to Urbandale FD for the invite and for the extremely well organized training opportunity. Great job


 
   
   
Clive Wildwood Residential

WHFD dispatched to Clive for a 2nd alarm residential assignment. 5571 arrived and assumed RIT operations until redirected to interior overhaul and also to take care of hot spots. Great work out of everybody.


 
   
   
3 CAR MVC

WHFD was dispatched for a 3 car mvc with injuries. Upon arrival all occupants were out of the vehicle, one pt seated against the wall with arm complaints. 5581 transported one pt and 5571's crew took care of some hazmat work and traffic control.


 
   
   
Training Burn

With the help and hard work of Clive FD the WHFD put on a joint training burn in a acquired type III building. Three burn cells were built inside the structure to contain the fires. Teams of 4 were grouped together from the departments and were rotated through 5 stations including, Fire attack, Fire behavior, Ventilation, RIT and Back-up lines. Everything went smooth and everyone involved was able to walk away with new tools for their tools boxes. Thanks for all the hard work that went into making the training a success.


 
   
   
Vehicle Fire

WHFD was dispatched for a vehicle fire on I-235. Upon arrival to scene DMFD was also rolling up. An initial line was pulled from pumper 5 but after a  problem with the nozzle a line was stretched from 5571 and the fire was extinguished.


 
   
   
Search and Rescue

WHFD acquired a type III construction building for training. Multiple drills were performed to the structure including roof work, search and rescue and forcible entry. This building was a great training tool and was well utilized.


 
   
   
Dahls Fire

Dispatched to Dahls Food in Clive as auto aid for a fire on the roof. Upon arrival no fire or smoke found. WHFD crew checked above the drop ceiling in the bakery for any smoke or fire. No fire or smoke found. Problem isolated to the air handling unit on the roof and all units back in service.


 
   
   
Pittsburg Drill Training

All WHFD members were placed in groups of 4 and performed the Pittsburgh Drill. All teams performed the drill successfully in the allotted time limit. One team went a second time and was able to complete the drill in zero visibility conditions. It was a great training and a great team building opportunity. Thanks to Clive Fire for the props


 
   
   
School Bus MVC

Dispatched to a 3 car MVC with a fully loaded school bus involved. WHFD responded with a chief, squad and rescue truck. Des Moines Fire arrived with Windsor and took control of the scene. No injuries from the accident and all WHFD units were back in service.


 
   
   
Extrication Training

WHFD was invited to attend an joint extrication training with Clive FD. 4 vehicles were available for cribbing and cutting training. Chief Cross along with Lt. Kallem from Clive went over cribbing vehicles on their roofs as well as a 4 and 6 point crib for extrication. Windsor FFI Cadet was able to get his hands on the tools and see how they react. Thanks to Clive for the invite and a great training opportunity.


 
   
   
Firefighter I and II

WHFD starts a new recruit down the path of FFI &II training in house. New recruit Ryan Adams has started the state ciriculum and is doing well. Thanks to all who have been availible to help with the skills.
